I'm a leftie and there are so few 'handed' things which bother me that I
barely even notice, but then many lefties are ambidextrous to a degree
anyway.

<Thinks> Cheque books were a slight pain, but they've pretty much gone now
so wibble flip dibble doo.

It was a similar difficulty that spurred me one summer to apply myself
to using my right hand for writing. In my case it was a pad of betting
dockets, which were stapled down the left side. After I'd torn out a
couple of dozen pairs of slips (top one white, the second pink), the
bump created by the leftover stubs, which were still stapled together,
made the pad very difficult to use for a leftie.

In between calls (I was taking telephone bets), I filled pages of a
large notebook with each letter of the alphabet, just as I had when I
first learned to write, but holding the pen in my right hand.

Eventually I was able to jot down customer bets right-handed, and by the
time I was back at university lectures I could take notes right-handed,
though my hand tired very quickly.

Exactly. My first father-in-law, who I loved dearly, couldn't stand to
see me chopping up food with my left hand and used to say 'Pshaw, - give
it here' which was quite irritating.

I didn't really mind. He meant well and it didn't do any harm.

The teacher at junior school made me write with my right hand. My
mother was down there like a shot when I told her. That put a stop to
it. Now I can write with both hands but not because of Mrs Chadwick, who
I believe died a couple of years ago in her nineties. She had taught my
father before me and he didn't like her either.

My wife says I look awkward and 'dangerous' chopping things using my left
hand, although I'm not, of course, and feel perfectly safe using a knife )

I think righties notice handedness more than lefties.

It's conditioning to an extent, I think. I remember watching a tennis on
telly a few years back and thinking - something's odd about how that
player plays. It took a few seconds to realise he (or it could have been
a she) was left handed. Sometimes it still doesn't look right to me.

I suppose when watching some sports activities, we can become so
engrossed that we involuntarily twitch as if we were playing the game
ourselves (I certainly do - my foot twitches a lot when I watch
football). If what one is seeing (eg, a left handed tennis player and
one is right handed) doesn't coincide with ones own natural physical
response, it might create a kind of dissonance.

Was that meant to be rude or is it just my mind?
